Burnsides: named for the Civil War era General Ambrose E. Burnsides (1824-1881.) He's shown above in two Mathew Brady photos, the first c. 1862 and the latter, c. 1880. Despite the spectacular whiskers, he was a mediocre general.The word was later flipped to give us "sideburns."
